Wood Staining
Wood Staining That Northern Virginia Homeowners Trust
Beautifully stained wood does not happen by accident. A well‑done stain brings out the natural grain, adds depth and richness, and transforms decks, fences, floors, and beams into magazine‑worthy features. A poor stain job can leave wood looking blotchy, faded, or worse than before.
At V4 Painting LLC, we take wood staining seriously. Our team carefully prepares every surface by cleaning, sanding, and stripping old finishes where needed so the new stain absorbs evenly and penetrates deeply. The result is no blotches, no peeling in six months, just a rich, protective finish that enhances your wood for years to come.
We have completed hundreds of wood staining projects across Woodbridge, Manassas, Alexandria, Arlington, Fredericksburg, Stafford, and all of Northern Virginia. From decks and fences to hardwood floors, beams, and furniture, every project receives the same level of care and precision because wood deserves to be done right.

Our Wood Staining Process
1) Free In-Home Estimate
- We assess the wood surface, check its current condition, and discuss color options with you. We’ll tell you exactly what prep work is needed and give you a detailed free quote no surprises.
2) Cleaning & Stripping
- We power wash or hand-clean the surface to remove dirt, mildew, and old failing stain. Old stain that’s peeling or flaking is stripped back before we apply anything new this is what most people skip and why their stain fails.
3) Sanding & Surface Prep
- We sand the wood to open up the grain and ensure the stain absorbs evenly. Proper sanding is the difference between a blotchy result and a rich, even finish that looks professional throughout.
4) Stain Application
- We apply premium penetrating stain in the direction of the grain, working in sections and back-brushing to ensure full even penetration. One or two coats depending on the wood type and desired depth of color.
5) Sealing & Final Inspection
- Where needed, we apply a protective topcoat or sealer to lock in the stain and maximize durability. Final walkthrough with you to make sure every inch looks exactly as it should.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does deck staining cost in Northern Virginia?
Deck staining typically costs between $400–$1,200 depending on the deck size, condition, and whether stripping of old stain is required. We provide free detailed estimates so you know exactly what to expect before we start.
How often should I restain my deck in Virginia?
In Virginia’s climate, most decks need restaining every 2–4 years. Semi-transparent stains typically last 2–3 years, while solid stains can last 3–5 years with proper prep. We’ll advise you on the best product for your situation.
Can you stain over old stain?
Sometimes it depends on the condition of the existing stain. If the old stain is still adhering well, we can apply a new coat over it with proper prep. If it’s peeling or flaking, we need to strip it first. We’ll assess this during your free estimate.
What’s the difference between stain and paint for wood?
Stain penetrates into the wood and enhances the natural grain it looks more natural and is easier to maintain because it doesn’t peel the way paint does. Paint sits on top and hides the grain entirely. For most decks, fences, and natural wood surfaces, stain is the better long-term choice.
